DescriptionA caltrop is a small defensive weapon made of metal. It is essentially a jack formed from four spikes. Three act as a base while the fourth sticks up to puncture anything that lands on it. They were used defensively by the Czechs during the Hussite Wars. Soldiers would attack the Austrian mounted army by scattering these while retreating. The Caltrops penetrated the hooves of the Austrian horses, leaving them lame and unable to follow the Czechs.
