DescriptionA Mladá Boleslav kroj consisting of a petticoat, skirt, apron, blouse, vest, shawl, headband, stockings, and shoes. The petticoat is made of white linen decorated with white on white cut work and embroidery. It has alternating rows of horizontal fold and cutwork insets from top to bottom. Its hem is trimmed with heavily detailed floral embroidery mixed with cut work of interlocking ovals. The rust-colored skirt is covered with slight embroidered floral patterns and is gathered at waist. The apron is made of white tulle and covered with floral designs. It is gathered at the waist. Its hemline and sides are scalloped. The white, linen blouse has a drawstring neckline and puffed sleeves. White on white cut work and embroidery adorn the sleeves. The cuffs are decorated with cutwork and embroidery lace. The burgandy velvet vest is covered with goldwork in floral designs accented with gold-colored sequins, and glass and metal seed beads. Parts of the vest are trimmed with white kid leather. Eight grommets on its front are laced with metallic gold cording. A rectangular length of gold-colored polyester(?) with pointed ends is secured across the top of front opening. The shawl is a near-match to the apron. It is also made of white tulle nearly covered with white on white floral embroiery. The embroidery is concentrated on its edges. The shawl is in a triangular shape. Its slanted sides are scalloped. There are three additional elements that make this kroj distinctive - its headband, stockings, and shoes. The headband is in a red cotton covered with a basket weave design and floral goldwork. This is a technique that involves wrapping gold wire around cut leather or cardboard. The goldwork is accented with faceted glass beads and rhinestones. White linen ties are affixed to either side of the headband. White lace trim extends around the ties and across the bottom of the headband. The stockings are made of white, wool and cotton, and is in an open weave. Each one extends over the wearer's knee. Most other kroje of Bohemia include red stockings. The kroj's shoes are called Butky and are made of red velvet that is accented with floral goldwork, sequins, and glass beading. Goldwork is a technique the involves wrapping gold wire around cut leather or cardboard. This pair of shoes would have been worn for special occasions.
This donation also includes a collar made of white cotton covered with cut work and white on white embroidery. It has tulle lace and rick rack insets, along with bobbin lace edging. It is likely part of the kroj.
