DescriptionA woman's kroj consisting of a blouse, jumper, apron, headpiece, sash, and ribbon. Its blouse is a light cream color and has puffed sleeves. A large section of brightly colored embroidery and cut work is affixed onto the top half of each sleeve. These sections were removed from another blouse. Lengths of yellow and white machine embroidered ribbon run around both cuffs. There are cross-stitched floral and geometric designs around the collar. It is held closed with red and white ribbon ties. A vertical line of embroidery runs down the front of the blouse, nearly to its bottom. The embroidery is pale pink, pale yellow, pale orange, and bright yellow. The black jumper has a pleated skirt decorated with nine lines of embroidery stitched around its bottom, roughly four and a half inches from its hemline. The top, center, and bottom lines are wavy. A group of three straight lines, two red and one green, lies above and beneath the center line. Bright orange cording is sewn to the front of the bodice in decorative geometric designs. The cording is accented with blue, white, and yellow embroidery. The cording and embroidery extend up and around the inner side of the straps. A small rectangle outlined in green is embroidered at the tops of both sides of the front. Nine pearl buttons run down the left side of the front opening, with five buttons along the right side. Orange rick rack runs around the neckline and down either side of the front opening. Half circles of cording and embroidery are sewn on either side of the bodice's back side. The apron is also a cream color apron and is largely covered with cut work and embroidery. The cut work on the left side is bright orange and dull yellow on the right. The embroidery is white, green, yellow, and black. Two bands of woven ribbon featuring floral designs run across the bottom of the apron. A length of narrow, yellow machine embroidered ribbon runs down the center of the apron. Bright orange and yellow bobbin lace runs across the hemline and up both sides. The apron has a wide, yellow machine embroidered waistband. The headpiece features a wide, red headband covered with circles of red, gold, silver, and dark blue beads. Additional lines of beading lie in between the circles and at either end of the headband. An amulet depicting Mary and Baby Jesus is sewn in the center of the main circle. Leafy, metal beading with three hanging flowers lies in the circles on either side. A length of tightly gathered ribbon acts as border between the headband and long hanging ribbons attached to one side. All of the ribbons are machine embroidered with colorful floral designs. The gathered ribbon is red while the hanging ribbons number in three yellow, four peach, and four red. Twelve metal beads of different design are sewn onto the yellow riibons. Each bead has a colorful flower attached to its face and all have hanging elements like flowers, ovals, leaves, and other shapes. Included with the kroj, is a yellow sash covered with floral machine embroidery. The design includes large and small red flowers, small dark blue and white flowers, and green leaves and stems.
There is also an orange ribbon covered with floral embroidery that features large red and pink flowers, and small dark and light blue flowers. The short stem in between the flowers each have seven green leaves.Credit LineGift of Eileen and the late Josef Mandát of Scarborough, Ontario, Canada
